Stocks opened the new calendar year on a negative trajectory, as the S&P 500 fell 0.6%, the Dow eked out a minimal 0.1% gain, and the Nasdaq Composite experienced a significant 1.6% decline—its worst day since October. Major tech stocks, including Apple, plummeted nearly 4% following a Barclays downgrade. AI beneficiaries Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices saw declines of 2.7% and 6%, respectively. Chatbot contenders Alphabet and Microsoft also experienced losses exceeding 1%. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF dropped 3.4%, and Intel fell by 4.9%. The market’s subdued start was marked by technology sector challenges and specific company downgrades.
